Description
This
pair
of
armbands
is
beaded
completely
on
one
side
. There are
four
horizontal
rows
of
beads
in a
predominantly
white
background
with
vertical
motifs
. There are
four
similar
motifs
in
colors
of
blue
,
yellow
,
red
,
green
, and
metallic
beads
that
form
an
X
intercepted
by
two
perpendicular
fork
designs
. A
series
of
four
stacked
diamond
shaped
motifs
in
red
,
green
and
metallic
beads
interrupt
the
pattern
. The
armbands
have a
blue
single
bead
border
. The
metallic
beads
were
used
in the
1890's
.
Dick
Conn
,
curator
of the
Denver
Art
Museum
was
consulted
in
November
1992
and
upon
examination
provided
information
. These
armbands
come
from the
Sioux
. They were
made
circa
the
1890s
. They are
made
of
leather
and
beads
. They are
men's
armbands
.
Nico
Strange
Owl
in
2004
identified
the
blue
beads
as "
Greasy
blue
" and the
red
as "
Red
Heart
". A
photograph
from
Local
History
Archive
shows
an
armband
hanging
above
a
fireplace
mantle
with
onlookers
.
